History

Until 1100, the area that is now known as Macon was settled by the Creek Native Americans and they had a culture that was based around agriculture. In the early 19th century, the land was settled by American frontier people who built a fort along the Ocmulgee River. Lead by Benjamin Hawkins, the fort served to protect the people of the southeast during the War of 1812. During much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was known as a hub for transportation and was known as The Central City.

The Macon Giants are a minor league baseball team that plays its home games in Macon and the Middle Georgia Derby Demons are a roller derby team.
